Chevy Volt Battery Replacement Cost
Replacing The Battery Pack On A Tesla Model 3 Costs More Than You Think
- According to a 2020 Greencars report, 16 kWh Chevy Volt batteries cost ~$4,000 to replace, about $240/kWh.
- A 2011-2015 Chevy Volt Remanufactured Battery Pack is priced at $6,000 at Greentec Auto. These batteries have 17.1 kWh of capacity, putting this price at $350/kWh in 2021 dollars. Sold with new modules, that same battery pack is priced at $8,000, placing it at $467/kWh in 2021.
- For the 2016-2018 Chevy Volt, battery packs are priced at roughly $3,000 on ebay. These batteries are 18.4 kWh, equating to $163/kWh to $152/kWh.
Tesla Puts Price On Model 3 Battery Module Replacement Around $5000
With the rise of electric cars the question the cost of replacement batteries has occupied many experts and owner forums. In a tweet last week Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, indicated the cost of replacing battery modules in the companies Model 3 will cost about $3000 – $7000 USD.
Not a bad price considering the current batteries are designed to last 300,000 to 500,000 miles, which is the equivalent of 1,500 cycles. Its key to note that the car has been designed so that only the battery modules, not the whole pack needs to be replaced.
How Do You Break A Tesla Model 3 Battery Pack
This Tesla Model 3 story begins as the EV is making its way down the road. According to Current Automotive, the vehicle struck a large rock at some point and subsequently driving over it. At this point, the rock caused severe damage to the battery pack. As a result, Current Automotive reports that the Model 3 became completely unresponsive and would not start up or drive at all.
According to Current Automotive, the Tesla Model 3, like many other brand-new electric vehicles, offers a battery warranty for at least 8 years or 100,000 miles. However, as Current Automotive points out, these types of warranties dont cover accidental damage such as this rock incident.
In this case, this Tesla Model 3 owner decided to utilize their insurance to cover these potential repair costs.

How Can You Protect Your Tesla
The bright side of this Tesla Model 3 story is that you will likely never have to pay for a battery replacement. This is because the warranty that comes with the vehicle covers manufacturing defects and even fire damage. However, if the battery pack gets damaged while on the road, you will more than likely be on the hook for the repair.
If you want to keep your Tesla Model 3 as safe as possible, youll want to avoid all debris on the road. Since sharp objects can potentially puncture the battery pack, it is worth keeping that in mind. From there, there isnt much else you can do. If you find yourself in a situation like this owner, you can lean on your insurance to cover the repairs.
Tesla Battery Replacement Cost: Warranty Coverage

Tesla warranties are robust and protect purchasers of all models from battery manufacturing defects and breakdowns that occur with normal use. The chart below illustrates a breakdown of Tesla warranties across its model lineup:

Tesla Tried To Charge $22500 For New Battery Pack When A $5000 Repair Did The Trick
Tesla has tried to charge a Model S owner $22,500 for a battery pack replacement out of warranty, but a third-party shop was able to fix the issue for a fraction of that cost.
As a Tesla owner, one of the most common questions I get asked is, How much does it cost if you need to replace the battery pack?
Its a hard question to answer since the vast majority of Tesla battery replacements have been done under warranty. Early on, Tesla offered eight-year unlimited mileage powertrain warranties for Model S and Model X.
With Model S production starting in 2012 and higher volumes not coming until 2014, only recently have those vehicles started to come off their powertrain warranty. We have seen quotes from Tesla for battery pack replacements between $20,000 and $30,000. Thats a lot of money, but the good news is that Teslas battery packs have been known to last a long time.
I have a Tesla Model X that had a battery pack last for more than 300,000 miles.
However, when the problem is not necessarily battery degradation and the battery pack simply fails, Tesla has been known to be quick to suggest a replacement rather than try to fix the battery pack.
That was the case of Tyler Hoover of Hoovies Garage after he bought a 2013 Model S P85. The electric vehicle, which was four months out of battery warranty, started to display a maximum battery charge level reduced error message and couldnt be charged above 50 miles.
How Much Does It Cost To Replace Your Tesla Model 3 12v Battery
The cost depends on when you need to do the replacement and where you are sourcing the replacement 12v battery from. If your Tesla Model 3 is still under warranty, the cost to replace the 12v battery is zero. However, the story is different if you do not have a warranty cover.
You may spend between $100 and $500, including the cost of parts and professional labor. A high-performance 12v battery costs more, so if you upgrade your Model 3s electrical demand, you may have to pay more for your replacement battery.
You can shop for a 12v battery on Amazon, where you can compare prices and brands. You can also shop in a physical store. The cost of the 12v battery varies from one brand to another. Note that the 12v battery is not made by Tesla, but you shouldnt have any problem finding a suitable replacement.

Battery Monitoring To Avoid Replacement
It should not be a surprise that treating your battery nicely can expand its life and delay replacement. Here are some tips on how to give your battery the TLC it needs.
- Avoid extreme high or low battery levels.
- Limit DC fast charging to special occasions.
- Small, frequent charges are better than large, infrequent charges.
- Get your battery to room temperature before charging when possible. Usually this is accomplished by your vehicle automatically once plugged in.
- Park in the shade during warm months to keep your battery cooler.
- A/C and heat use a lot of energy so consider preheating your car while itâs plugged in or using seat warmers.
- Accelerate slowly to increase range.
- Avoid excessive highway speeds.
- Check out your manuals battery maintenance tips.
- Swap your tires for more efficient tires seasonally appropriate.

Whats Involved In Maintaining Or Replacing A Battery
Tesla Model 3 – 12V Battery Replacement by Tesla
Batteries are not one size fits all. There are several things to consider:
- Size:Typically based on your vehicles make, model and engine type, it is literally the footprint of the battery, along with placement of the battery terminals. Every battery has a slightly different terminal placement. Take care to make sure the new battery you are putting into your car, truck or SUV is the same size as the one you are replacing. Its got to be apples to apples. In other words, dont try to fit a pineapple into the space reserved for a canteloupe.
- Age:Like a loaf of fresh-baked bread, batteries are best when fresh, within six months of manufacture. Most batteries, like the one in your current vehicle, will have a date code to tell you this information. When in doubt, call the battery maker to decipher the date code.
- Cold Cranking Amps: Can this battery start your frozen SUV at 0 degrees Fahrenheit in the dead of winter when the oil is as thick as molasses? The higher the Cold Cranking Amps rating, the better the batterys starting power. The rating refers to the number of amps a 12-volt battery can deliver at 0 degrees F for 30 seconds, while maintaining at least 7.2 volts.
- Reserve Capacity: In the case of an alternator failure, the Reserve Capacitywill give you an estimate of how long your cars battery will be able to run on battery power alone, without the help of the alternator.

Read Your Warranty Closely
Teslas warranty is designed to cover things like manufacturer defects that cause battery failure or drastically decreased performance through no fault of the driver. The companys warranty actually covers fire damage as well, even if a battery fire is caused by external factors.
RELATED
If the damage to your Teslas battery pack isnt covered under warranty, itll get kicked over to insurance to pay some of the cost. The driver is left to pay the difference, if their insurance pays anything at all, out of pocket. If insurance wont pay up, youre stuck with the entire bill.
That can be compounded by the fact that Tesla sometimes suggests complete battery replacements for problems that dont require it. Automotive YouTuber Rich Rebuilds experienced that for himself when he helped someone avoid a $22,500 repair bill for a total battery replacement on their Model 3.
Tesla wanted to replace the whole pack, but after diagnosing the problem, replacing a couple of bad modules for only around $5,000 was a better fix. Stories like this and others have generated quite a lot of flack for Tesla and spurred discussions around a consumers right to repair similar to what happened when Apple released the iPhone.

How Tesla Replaces Batteries:
A Teslas battery pack can fail for a variety of reasons. It could be a voltage regulator problem, a fuse problem, or any of a number of other minor causes. If the problem is contained within a single battery module, the entire battery pack is affected. Because the voltages across all battery modules must be comparable. Even if only one module displays a value that is vastly different from the others, the entire pack may fail.
Bring your vehicle to Tesla and they will repair it. They will not, however, replace a single module. Instead, they install a brand-new or remanufactured battery pack and then send the old one to one of their battery plants for repair and refurbishment. Once the old battery pack has been repaired and inspected, it is returned to the system, ready to be installed in another vehicle that requires a battery swap.
How Far Can A Tesla Battery Go

The main reason its hard to judge how long an electric car battery will stay on the road is that they simply havent been on the road for that long the Tesla Model S only launched in 2012.
For the Tesla Model 3, released in 2017, the companys warranty covers the first eight years or 100,000 miles on the entry-level model, whichever comes first. If the battery capacity during the warranty period falls below 70 percent, Tesla covers the necessary repairs.
In April 2019, Musk that the Model 3 drive unit and body are designed to last for a million miles. However, the current battery modules should last 300,000 to 500,000 miles or 1,500 cycles. That would mean the battery would require replacing once or twice over the vehicles lifetime.
A survey of 350 Tesla owners in Europe found that their cars dropped around five percent of their capacity after 50,000 miles before dropping much slower thereafter. The group extrapolated the data to claim they would have lost 20 percent of the original capacity after 500,000 miles.

How To Keep An Ev Battery In Peak Condition
Replacing Tesla Model 3 Battery Just Got Cheaper
EV batteries are expensive, and if they’re not properly cared for, they can lose their charge quickly.
Here are a few tips to help you keep your EV’s battery in top shape:
1. Keep the battery clean. Dirt and debris can build up on the battery contacts and cause corrosion. Use a soft cloth to wipe down the battery regularly.
2. Keep the battery charged. When you let an EV’s battery run low, it puts strain on the battery and can shorten its lifespan. Try to keep the battery above 50% charge whenever possible.
3. Store the battery properly. If you’re not going to be using your EV for a while, it’s important to store the battery properly. Batteries should be stored in a cool, dry place, especially before charging.
4. Avoid extreme temperatures. Extreme cold or heat can damage an EV battery. Try to keep the battery between 32 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit whenever possible.
5. Use a battery charger designed for EVs. Using the wrong charger can damage the battery, so make sure you’re using a charger specifically designed for electric vehicles.
